So I've read that this summer could be the hottest summer in recorded history...Last summer the weather got intolerably hot for about two weeks, and this coming summer is supposed to be even worse...So with that in mind, what are some innovative and good ways to keep your house and backyard cool? What's the best defense against the summer heat?

Keep your blinds closed during the day so the hot sun isn't warming up your house more.
Turn on your ceiling fans throughout the house.
Run a dehumidifier
Cook outside on the grill. Try not to use your oven.
Run your dryer as little as possible.

I have thought of something that I have not seen anybody do but think it might work. Put a light colored tent up over the houses roof. The tent should be open at both ends and in fact all the way around the edge of the tent should be open. This will keep the sunshine from heating the attic space under the roof. The reason for the open space under the tent being open is to ensure that there is not a set of trapped air to be heated by the tent. If you have ever gone into the attic when it is sunny and hot outside you probably have felt that the attic gets many degrees hotter than it is outside.

1. Plant dense tall bushes or trees along the south and west facing walls.
2. If you live in a dry area where nights are cool, keep windows open at night and shut during the day. Stale cool air is still better than hot fresh air.
3. Using evaporative coolers if you live in a dry climate.
4. Invest in an air conditioner, at least for one room like the bedroom. Use it only when you need it. Don't use the evaporative cooler and air conditioner at the same time.

heres an idea. get everyone to use less electricity, therefore not polluting the earth. that way we won't be getting these "intoerably hot summers" temperature change is due to global warming, and the US is one of the main offenders for polluting...about 30% of the worlds pollution come of america.. more than the whole of the south equator
