The pain is sometimes real and sometimes it's just part of the script. These guys practice together so much that they've worked out ways to make it seem like they're getting hit a certain way when in fact, they're not.
Most of the blood drawing is faked too --- some wrestlers actually "blade" themselves to draw blood and some of them use concealed sacs of movie make-up that when broken make it seem like the wrestler has been badly hurt.
A perfect example of this was the way Edge and Orton were so bloody on Sunday nite - something that would have taken very serious cuts to achieve and lots of stitches to close - but then appeared on Monday nite on Raw with only a couple of Steri-Strips strategically placed.
It's all part of the show and unfortunately, it's what makes people suspicious when a real injury has happened (like with HHH last weekend).
Bottom line: most of what you see is not only scripted, but it's also not real....If you watch very closely you'll see the little tricks used by all wrestlers to help pull off the illusions. If you don't see them and truly believe it's all real, then that means they're doing a good job because you're buying what they're selling and that's what pro wrestling is all about.
ADDED: Had to add this after reading a later comment....Owen Hart died because he fell while making his entrance into the ring...not from an injury sustained during a match. And as far as going thru tables goes - watch closely to see where the wrestlers' hands are when they go thru the lightweight tables. Another example - if someone is in a corner and supposedly gets hit with a chair - watch closely and see what the chair REALLY hits. It doesn't even touch the other person, but lots of practice allows these guys to be good enough to make you THINK it did.

Yes wrestling is scripted and so is the wrestling moves, the punches and kicks are fake although most people think the moves like the vertical suplex are real...well they are but the ring mat is soft it's like a bed.Wrestling is fake and i you don't know that than you are very sad.The only time they get hurt is if an accident happens which isn't very likely to happen.

Is it setup, it has always been decided who wins, but the slams and slaps and some punches are real. I mean, how can you fake someone being broken through a table or all that blood, what about Owen Hart, if its fake why is he dead. People say its fake because they generalize the whole match. Let me just clear this out most slams, slaps and punches are real, but some are fake (10 count punches for example, some dont even connect) hope thats what you wanted to hear.
JEFF HARDY RULES (had to say that)

Yea the pain is real. The things they do aren't easy and hurt alot even to a point were they could die. Thats why wrestlers train to wrestle. The reason it is scripted is because the work style WWE has. It is scripted to get the crowd to act a certain way to a wrestler. And to make WWE money.

It is scripted and the fighting is acted out. It takes lots of practice energy and is dangerous. Accidents happen and you can get badly hurt. It's an adult evning soap story. Enjoy it. It takes lots of work to put on.

You're right. Like when Ric Flair slaps them in the chest I mean that has to sting a little. I don't know why people say its fake. It annoys me haha. Byeee!

The people that say it's fake are the unknowledgable people out there that believe the shows are supposed to be actual sporting events, and not sports entertainment.
