I mean are humans so depraved to think they'll find a trophy or see a dead body or something?

I guess so. I think to a certain extent we all have a morbid side.

They can't seem to help being curious. I was standing on a street corner in NYC, waiting for the light to change, and I saw a man get hit by a car, fly about 40 feet and land under the wheels of a bus which was just pulling away from the curb. The bus ran him over. At least 200 people witnessed the accident and everyone was frozen for a second, then all hell broke loose. I was on my way somewhere so I kept walking through the intersection only to notice I was the only person walking AWAY from the scene. People that weren't even at the intersection when it happened were running down the street toward the corner, yelling to each other come see what happened. I got about half way down the block and people were still rushing by my to see the guy in the gutter. It was crazy. Of course, at that point I gave into the mob mentality and I actually turned around and walked back to watch it all unfold. People were standing around eating pizza staring at the guy that was bleeding. I don't know why we all did that. I think it was just insane, uncontrollable curiosity. I know I keep thinking 'that could have been me'. It was morbid.

That is a very good question. If you are not there to give aid or assistance, then I feel you should stay away. Let those that are trained do there job.
Rubber neckers are a real pain!

Still why they do this? I don't know! I will check back later to see the other answers.

Still, this was a great question, even though I didn't give an answer.

Perhaps they are flocking in an attempt to be of help and not necessarily be there for a morbid reason.

I think everyone has this desire (bad word, couldn't think of another) to see something they've never seen, like a mangled, bleeding or dead body. It is morbid curiosity! (that's what I could think of above, lol)

I hate that! They (in my opinion) just want to feed off of other peoples misery.I guess they don't get enough of it from the news and movies.

It's fascinating. It's not something you see every day. Something about how that could have been us, or just thinking about how bad it could have been.
