There are only three things a meteorologists really needs:
(1) Observations (come from a variety of instruments like ASOS, radar, satellite, etc. or just using your two eyes like in the middle of a storm chase)
(2) Education (be it formal or just information you collect for yourself)
(3) Experience (this is your gut feeling...it comes from pattern recognition where you've seen the same setup before and know what happened as a result of that setup. Sometimes this is all the more education a person needs)

And of course numerical models help too, but they are useless without the above three ingredients.

Satellite imagery can track cloud movements;

Barometers (air pressure monitors) have always been used to predict the weather;

Weather planes - aeroplanes that have radars, thermometers and other instruments - which fly at altitude to 'read' the atmosphere. In UK there's one called "Snoopy".

Weather stations dotted all around the country measuring rainfall, windspeed, sun strength - to track changes and trends.
