....while most of the culture is actually born in Europe. The greatest artists are Italians, the greatest writers are Russians, greatest mathematicians -Russians, Germans, and so on.
Where is the contribution of the US? The useless flight to the Moon, the atomic bomb? The only great thing whiich was born in USA is the computer. However, many software engineers come from India, China, and other countries. The technological revolution belongs to the whole mankind.
So, why do some people continue to call US a great country???

yes, I do agree with the fact, that My (Russian) culture is one of the oldest and greatest ones. We have deep historical and cultural roots. However, I think, that it is a widespread belief that the USA is a great country. They have a great influence on other countries, they are not afraid of voicing their opinions, they truly support their roots and they have their own interpretations of global values.

I believe it was British P.M. Tony Blair who most recently said that the measure of a great country was how many people wanted to get in vs. how many wanted to leave. Now we have some Americans, mostly spoiled entertainers, who are forever trotting out that if this or that happens, they will leave America. But then they don't. We would be better off w/o them.
It is not what America has given the world technologically that has most benefitted mankind. It is the freedom to be succeed or fail based on personal merit. It is also the freedom to speak, write or worship and not face prison or a firing squad. And America is the most generous nation on earth and i'm not talking about government sponsored foreign aid crap. I'm referring to personal charity as it is proven time and again whenever there is a catastrophe anywhere in the world.
YES - America has its faults and its problems and i'd be the first to point them out. But it is still a great country.

The U.S.A. is a GREAT country!

The thing you have to keep in mind is the United States is a much younger country than the one's you listed.
History is the difference.

The U.S.A has just begun in the last 200 years or so to lead the way in the world.
The technological revolution does NOT belong to all of mankind!
We could have kept it to ourselves and left everyone else in the dust .....
But how practical is it to be able to call someone who doesn't have a phone??
Just the contributions many American great minds have produced in the 20th century alone prove how Great the United States is!!
I'm proud to be an American! God Bless the U.S.A.!!

People call the United States a great country because they are from the United States. If you were from Japan you would call Japan a great country, which it is. It's about being proud of where you are from.

Anyway, here are some Americans who I think are great:
- Langston Hughes
- Ella Fitzgerald
- John Steinbeck
- Francis Crick and James Watson (and Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin)
- Bill Gates (including for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation)
- Albert Einstein
- David Ho
- Paul Farmer

I think it's because we're a very young country compared to the ones you've mentioned and in that short period of time we've contributed quite a lot.

Also we're pretty much the country where people from the counties you mentioned have large populations living here and wanting to live here.

If we sometimes come across as arrogant maybe that's because again compared to the countries you mentioned we're pretty much teenagers....and we all know how arrogant they can be.

I think it has a lot to do with our contribution to the world of 1987 teen comedy/horror flick "The Lost Boys" starring Corey Feldman as "Edgar Frog".

You might wish to ask this of the people who come to the US from all over the world, often at the risk of life and limb, to try to make a better life here. It appears that many succeed.

that's all very true, but the reason the US is great is because we have freedom and people can be happier and live better lives without having to be under a really opressive government like in many other countries.
