This canard has long been denied - you have been reading too many lurid historical romances. Strangely enough, the only known certain case of a slave breeding plantation happened in Massachusetts in Colonial times. It proved to be uneconomic. Thereafter slave owners left it to nature - and that proved adequate for their purposes.

Absolutely true. That "breeding" are extensively practiced, and not only in America, but also in other countries where there were slaves, like the ancient Greek or Egypt.
The goal was "get" champions, because the "owners" use to compete among them; and they bet fortunes. Beside, having beautiful or strong slaves was a way to show the status of a family: if you have a big slave probably you were a rich man.

Not fully true but yes slave owners purposely bred their strongest slaves. People may not like whats coming next but look at American sports there is still evidence of it today.
Also natural selection and survival of the fitest weeded out the weak. Dont forget that slave owners bought naturally strong and big slave too.

Slaves were generally allowed to choose their own mates. Since physical beauty, strength, and intelligence are key features everyone looks for in a mate, they didn't need to interfere with normal selection.
