The ban will be that you're not allowed to smoke in a 'public place'. Since prison will be your 'home' for a time you should be allowed to smoke. You might not be able to smoke when you see your visitors because that would be classed as being in public as 'the public' will be your visitors...if you see what I mean.
Good luck dude, and try not to be so naughty!

Technically no, as prisons are not a "public place" (although I suppose visiting rooms might be included), but the original idea from the Home Office was that it would be left to individual Prison Governors.
And Ernie.E - there will be a complete smoking ban in the House of Commons - do try and get your facts right before making fatuous remarks about politicians! (Oh by the way, before you say I'm wrong, I work there)!

It most likely will, here in the U.S. there is a ban on smoking in federal buildings and it applies to federal prison as well. NYC bans smoking in buildings as well and it applies to the city jail as well. In state prison you cannot smoke in the buildings but you can smoke outside. They still sell cigarettes in commissary and if caught smoking in a building you will get an infraction.

If you can take the punishment don't do the crime. If not smoking is you biggest fear of prison then we need to make them a lot tougher.

This is a well thought out piece of legislation. It will be illegal to smoke in the workplace when the ban is introduced, but not illegal to smoke in your home. Warders cannot smoke, because they work there, but prisoners can, because they live there. I believe that the opposite is true for care homes full of non-criminals.

It has been banned in MOST ALL jails and prisons here in the states, even before restaurants and such. I would guess it is just a matter of time there too. SORRY FOR YOUR LUCK.

Considering that prisoners have just been given legal aid to get the right to have illegal drugs in the cells I don't see how the right to smoke can be refused. It's a joke, a mockery isn't it. It seems such rules only apply to the free and innocent in this crazy UK that Blair has created.

No prisons are exempt from the ban, so if you want to smoke, get banged up.
