I was made bankrupt a few years ago and had an early discharge, Im not back in work and need to open a basic bank account with ATM cash card maybe debit card and direct debit / standing order facilities . It doesnt need overdraft or anything else so to speak. Ive tried a few companys but no luck as of yet .

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers fellow answerers.

The best banks to try are Nationwide or the Co-op, they have basic bank accounts that bankrupts can open as they dont require credit checks

I used Alliance & Leicester after my discharge and also have a Nationwide account. You may try a basic savings account Cashbuilder) with the Nationwide which pays miserly interest but does give you an ATM card and enables you to draw cheques at the counter for sending to third parties.

To those answerers who abuse this type of query, remember that it could happen to you. I had a business that failed, I'm not proud of going bankrupt, but I am not ashamed either. I've rebuilt my life through hard work and my problems are a distant memory.

Most banks offer a basic bank account that does not require a credit check, they are legally required to, so you should be able to get one of these. The one with Yorkshire Bank definitely offers DDs ond SOs and an ATM card but you will not be able to get a maestro card at all.

the dss should have help for this, as they want to pay electronically into accounts.
If you really cant get one, the dss must have giro facilities for this situation.
i got a basic one, as i read the times...and heard of this when the gov were just planning to "force" everone to end giro payments, in the financial section. it said banks "had" to provide them, for these payments, under legislation. This may have now changed, as things do, when the dust has settled, but i walked into a major bank, and demanded a basic account. the under manager, confused, checked, and siad oh yes, we do those....i knew before he did!
They are still very aloof about giving away these non profit making accounts, but it is (was) your right, under whatever deal the gov did, to secure universal electronic dss payments.
I tried to get a 2nd one (for pigeonholing payments) and the first thing another bank said "have you got any sort of account elsewhere".....sorry, cant help!
They seem to be a right, now dss pays this way, but they will use any excuse, so be firm.
or, be firm with dss......dont stress, your legaly entitled to payments....they cant insist on an account, if you cant get one!

I think you will find it hard. They definatley wont offer you a debit card,SO or DD facilities. You will be lucky to get a basic account which you will have to withdraw money from the bank itself so they can check you account at each transaction to make sure there are funds available. Keep trying, go see the bank manaer and state you case.

The Abbey do a basic bank account for discharged bankrupts. The Citizens Advice Bureau have a list of all banks who do this. Ask them. (UK)

You might want to try a credit union maybe . Other then that you might need someone to open one for you . Find out why you cannot open one still and what you need to do so you can . You will have to talk to a bank manager about this .

Unfortunately, you are currently an economic pariah and I doubt that any bank will touch you with a bargepole.
