There really is no way to properly identify a user based on his/her email address, that information can be forged -- what you can do is trace the path to which the mail has taken though the internet based on the e-mail header information.
Most of the time, you can see where the e-mail used that originated the message, not necessary a valid e-mail but this can help determine whether or not the e-mail is from a valid sender. You can use this information to look up who owns the domain and who owns the IP address that's assigned to the domain.
For example, I get an email from "Fifth Third Bank" with a supposed e-mail address of "services-080751ver@security.53.com" which is definitely fake/forged. Looking at the e-mail header, I see it started from host124-116-dynamic.11-87-r.retail.telecomitalia.it (87.11.116.124). I can use such sites as http://www.arin.net and provide it with the IP address "87.11.116.124" to find out that the IP address is registered with the Europeans registry and will have to use http://www.ripe.net/whois to find out who actually owns the IP address, which is own by Telecom Italia S.p.A. TIN EASY LITE.

Thats more difficult than doing a reverse lookup on a phone number. There is going to be a database of phone number, from phone companies, etc. But email address come and go so much, I don't think anyone can possible have a 100% database of email addresses.
Well any hoo, at least give it a shot by typing these 4 words at google.com: reverse lookup email address
Seems to be quite a few sites out there though, to my surprise.
Good luck

I suggest this service: http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=538
It's a cheap service that works great! It could be used for a much deeper search. You can use it to get hold of different varieties of background reports, and in addition cell numbers, addresses and names.. you can get unlimited reports... I ran with this because I required to verify more numbers. You can get the name, other phone number, address history, relatives, and much more about anyone! The completly free reverse phone lookup generally doesn't provide anything interesting. To get interesting information, money will must be paid. The free searches don't provide considerably more than what may be found through the phone directory or personal information and they simply require your email to send spam. The reverse phone detective search tool does work, but you should use just the service that I posted above. The last thing you want to do, is pay for a service and find the numbers you want to lookup are not available in their directory.
The service that I reccomend doesn't have any kind of problem , you won't get any bad surprise! Trust it!

reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.
Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.
