Yes, it is true. judging from the nature of your question, I take it you are a complete newbie, so let me clarify a few things:
a)the computer must be on,
b)you must have software that will play music CD's (if you have microsoft windows, your windows media player will play it)
c)you must have speakers connected to your computer
if you have all three of those requirements met, then just pop in your CD, open windows media player, (should be in your start menu under 'all programs') and then click the 'play' menu item and select the "DVD, VCD, or CD Audio" option

Yes, Of course computers will support almost any kind of media/Formats. CD uses the .cda format and it should just play as soon as you put it in otherwise you will have to open of Windows Media player and select the CD drive that the cd is in and play it that way.

Yes, you can play a CD on a computer. You need to be careful though because some Sony CD's (BMG label) contain spyware. The following URL is to an article in Business Week Online about the problem. I don't play any CDs on my computer as I feel it isn't worth the risk.

Sure. By default it should start the music player. If an option box opens tell it to always open that type of disk in the music player.
You should also be able to play DVDs the same way.
