If you don't have a filter you should get one and If you do you should clean the tank weekly.

If you have a 40gallon long tank you'll want a filter that is made for a 16-100gallon long tank. Turtles are very messy herptiles that really need a filter in order to stay healthy. It's a must. Unless you want to clean out the tank every other day you must have a filter. BE SURE you have a large enough tank as well.

1. Big tank. Turtles should have at least 10 gallons of swimming water per inch of turtle shell length. This helps them in many ways and it helps keep the water cleaner.

2. Remove uneaten food promptly. Many keepers feed their turtles in separate tubs that they can clean more easily- Rubbermaid tubs, for example. Leave it in there for a few hours (with the right lighting and temps) and let it eat and defecate there.

3. Use a filter system rated at 2-3 times what a same-size fish tank would need. Even with filtration you may need to do water changes.

4. Make sure your basic cares are rock solid- water temps a good 75-80F, good lighting, etc.

You need a good filter. Turtle tanks are almost impossible to keep clean without one. They make special turtle filters now that sit down in the water so it isn't noisy hanging off the side of your tank. A filter is pretty much your only option.

I had horrible luck with filters for my red eared slider, they just quit working. I got a smaller plastic container so he could swim and eat (he doesn't eat if he's not in the water for some reason). I empty the smaller container at least every 2 days or more often as it gets dirty.
The bonus is I don't have to try and clean a huge tank everytime it's dirty. I just have a minor cleanup every now and then for the rest of the tank.
