Particularly tomato paste. I have washed it about 10 times in all hot water ( I do not have a dishwasher). I have even let it soak in all hot water and the smell will not come out.

The tomato has plagued plastic storage containers since the 60's and the invention of Tupperware. Soak the container in diluted vinegar for at least a half-hour, then smear thickly with dish washing liquid, Rinse well. I have a wretched time getting rid of spaghetti sauce residue in my containers, and this is the only thing that seems to work.

You can try a spoonful of vinegar. Of course, then it will smell like vinegar. :-) Or a tablespoon of baking soda to absorb the odor. Cover the container and leave the soda overnight, then rinse the container out.
If it's really bad, pour some chlorine bleach (a capful) into the container, fill with hot water and let sit for about 20 minutes. The bleach will sterilize the container, remove any stains and eradicate any odors.

I've also used vinegar to wash the containers, after soaking in the vinegar for 5 minutes in hot soapy water, then put in dishwasher...

Soak in hot soapy water and add a tbsp. of bleach. Rinse well in hot water! Removes stains too! Good luck! ( Bleach is safe ! Just wash and rinse well)

Put baking soda inside and shake the containers to spread it around, let it sit for awhile, rinse with cold water.

put water and some cut up lemon wedges and microwave it for about 2 minutes with the top on but slightly vented. this should take the smell out of your containers and any smells you might have in your microwave.

You can use bleach without water,or there is a cleaner calle Krud Kutter.They both work fine.
