Have a open and tranparent discussion with the employee and try to understand his problems relating to his leave of absence. What is required is mutual faith and once mutual faith and trust is established , an amicable solution will emerge. Some cocession and genuine help may have to be extended to the employee so that his leave of absence can bereduced to very minimum.

What's the question? If you give an employee a leave of absence then they are not at work and depending on the position and how long the employee is gone you may need to find a replacement etc. Human Resources is responsible for most of this and I am guessing you are not in HR since you are asking.

What do you mean? If you are talking about replacement, you can advertise the position. Let the candidate know that is is a temporary position until such and such a date. I have had an employee take a leave of absence and it can be hard to find someone to replace the person. My employee came back when she was supposed to and the temp that I hired knew this.
