This is actually a very good sign. They are developing reflexes that they will need later in life. Even adults get the feeling that they are falling just before they fall asleep sometimes, and infants go through this as well. It's a good sign of nervous system development.

Babies' breathing is very irregular. Not to worry. My mother said that when my sister was born (her first baby), she tried placing her in a bassinet next to their bed, so she could be right there when the baby woke up in the middle of the night. But after listening to her irregular breathing, and panicking every time there was a pause, she knew that wasn't going to work, because she was never going to get to sleep listening to the baby's breathing all night. She took her into her own room and put her in her crib to sleep.

My baby girl does the same thing. My Dr. said it is quite normal. (the breathing thing really freaked me out in the beginning to) Try to swaddle her if she's waking herself up with the jumping. Other then that I wouldn't worry, but ask your Dr. It will make you feel better hearing it right from them!

they are in REM sleep, which is actuall the deepest sleep they can be in...babies dream just like we do...their dreams may not have plots or storylines like ours do, but they do dream!
that is why they say when your child is sleeping and you hear them start to stir in the middle of the nite, give it a minute before getting up to check on them....chances are they ARE sleeping and will go right back to dreaming in a second!

They just get startled. It is good because it shows their reflexes are working the way they are supposed to.
