I stupidly forgot I was cooking some rice the other day which subsequently boiled dry and burnt my stainless steel saucepan.

Anyone got any tricks of removing it without scratching the hell out of my pan?

Put water in your pan, enough to cover the burned area and not dry out. Heat it slowly, just until the water is simmering.
There are several things you can try as cleaning agents, but NOT all together!
Sea salt
Vinegar
Household bleach
Simmer your pan for about 5-10 min and let it sit with your cleanser of choice until the water has cooled enough to clean your pan out; to do that without scratching it use a green scrubbing pad like ScotchBrite.
The next time you boil rice dry, place the hot pan in a sink with cold water in it, about 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) deep. It will make a boiling sound but it will be much easier to clean. Let the pan sit in the cold water for a good 10 min to loosen the stuck-on part.

Don't you hate that? I did exactly the same thing about a year ago to one of my Cephalon pots. What a mess!.
A friend's mother told me to take a box of baking soda..(I used Arm and Hammer but any brand will work), dump enough of it in the pan to cover all the blackened area. Add several cups of water to the pan and bring it to a boil, then turn off the heat, cover the pan and let it sit for about 20 minutes. This will soften a lot of the black carbon from the burnt rice. You can use a plastic scraper, plastic scrubber and a lot of elbow grease to loosen the crud, but it will probably take several repeats of this to get most of it off. I was able to remove 98% from my pot with this method.

I had done the same and tried every so called miracle cleaner to no avail, not even the old fashioned methods worked. There is a however a solution if you can find a sheet metal shop, someone who makes stainless steel items such as oven flues, counter tops (look in your local yellow pages under sheet metal). They use a special scourer to polish the sheet metal after it's completion and it doesn't scratch either. If you ask nicely like I did he will probably give you a small piece. Good luck it does work

Pour enough biological washing powder in the bottom of the pan and add hot water to make a solution. Leave to soak for a few hours and the burnt crust will just lift off leaving your pan like new

Oh, you're lucky it's stainless steel. Do you have any of those little plastic scrapers that come with Pampered Chef stoneware or that you may have from a Tupperware party. You can use those to really dig at the crud without scratching your pot. Then you can use Comet or Bar Keepers Friend to polish it up. Just keep working at it. It will be okay.

You really don't have to worry about how you clean a stainless steel pan. That's what's so great about them!

I have always used an SOS pad (or the like) on my pans and they still look great after 20+ years. Scouring pads are also the easiest way to clean up your stainless...so don't be afraid.

fill the pan with hot water and add some fabric softner, let it sit for a while. The softner will break the bond with the pan. It may take a few applications to get it all off.
