I'm not trying to be obnoxious, or anything. I really do not "get" it and doubt I ever will. It just doesn't seem like a real sport to me. Baseball- that's a sport, as it has a point. This seems more like a bad commute.

So why do people like it?

If you are going to give this question a thumbs down, at least explain why. So many touchy people on here.

The point of window shopping is that you may eventually buy what you are looking at. So from this I should infer that the point of people watching Nascar is that they hope to eventually become a Nascar driver?

I'm not a NASCAR fan (which seems kind of odd since I grew up in the boondocks), but the reason it's a real sport are as follows:

1. If you look at most of the drivers, you will find that they're all very fit. That's because it takes a lot of stamina to drive for 500 miles at close to 200 mph, especially in a car that doesn't have air conditioning and is vibrating like nobody's business. Most of the drivers have to be athletic.

2. It's a race, but there's strategy involved. Depending on when a car makes a pit stop, it can have a dramatic effect on the outcome of the race. It's not always the fastest car (in terms of potential) that wins.

3. It's fun to see crashes, especially the spectacular ones that the driver manages to walk away from unharmed.

Who knows...it's boring as heck. They drive around in a car that's going real fast hitting speeds similar to those that I do on Highway 15 in between LA and Barstow.

Maybe it's because it's a sport that gives spectators an excuse to set up their fifth-wheels and sit around and drink beer all day.

Well Nascar gives rednecks with 6th grade educations a place to go and drink beer and camp in the back of their pick-up trucks for a weekend. Don't worry most people in america don't understand it either.

go fast turn left it seems. there is alot of teamwork and engineering in those races and it is also very interesting. the fastest growing spectator sport for the last few years. it is definiely not a "good ole boy" sport anymore. those big companies pay big bucks to get their name on the side of those cars.

The sport is mostly in the mechanics, pit stops, and pit crew. Less about driving.
