IT is the story of Jason and the Argonaut. Jason was sent on a quest to get the golden fleece. In reality the king who sent Jason on the quest really want to get him killed. Jason hired most of the Greek heroes of Myths, (Herakles, Atalanta, Orpheus, etc etc) Along the way he have many adventures, that involves harpies, clashing rocks that must be navigated, etc, etc. When he finally reached the island of the fleece, he was helped by the daughter of the king who have the Golden fleece, Medea. Medea, is a more fascinating character than Jason and it will be too long to get into here.
One theory on why Jason and the Argonauts was told was the it was a travelogue and the trade route of the black sea.

The best version in English is Robert Graves's "The Golden Fleece"
It's the story of Jason who was sent to recover the golden fleece from a Barbarian tribe at the Black Sea, He and his companions went with the ship "Argo", hence the story is also known as the Argonaut myth.
Medea, the sorceress, daughter of the Barbarian king falls in love with Jason and helps him to get the fleece, on condition that he take her with him to Greece and marry her. He does so, and she helps him defeat his uncle who caused the death of his parents and usurped the throne.
