Beefheart! Zappa is Jazz drivel. The Captain taught him how to be weird. Plus Van Vliet has one of the most capacious vocal ranges in history and he wrote a song called 'Neon Meate Dream of a Octofish' Nuff Said!

Zappa, Zappa and then Zappa some more.
Beefheart did some cool stuff like "Safe as milk" but Zappa was a bona fide genius.
I just saw Zappa Plays Zappa in December. It was awesome. Dweezil, Terry Bozzio, Steve Vai and Napoleon Murphy Brock. Very , very cool.

Leaving the "weird" out of the equation (they were bonkers) - it would have to be Zappa. Very few people are innovative - Zappa not only created and invented trails for others to follow he still influences music today (and, to my mind, always will). He was dead too soon.
