A Newton (capitalize it) is a unit of force, with the units being kg*m/sec^2 (read kilogram meter per second squared).

Picture yourself out in space with a rocket pack on your back. You start the rocket pack and it puts out a constant thrust. With nothing to provide resistance in a vacuum, you will accelerate at a specific rate. The thrust force pushes you forward with the same acceleration no how fast you're going at any given moment.

The thrust force can be measured in Newtons. One Newton is about the force that an apple puts on your hand when you hold it.
