My computer has a 512MB PC6400 DDR2/800 Memory card of RAM and i wanted to know if i can put another 512 mb card that is not the same type like the PC6400 i wanted to install a memory card that is lower. can i do that or will it affect my computer's speed or is it better to have 1 gb of ram and not the same type.

Having the 1GB total will be better than what you have now. But their are two reasons why it would be better to get a second stick identical to the first. First off, getting a second slower stick will slow down the first, both sticks have to run at the same speed, and it will always be the lower of the two. Secondly, if they are identical, you can run in dual channel mode, which gives a good performance boost.

so you're saying that you want to put in a RAM stick rated at a lower speed than what you haev now.

ok. it would be fine, only the ram you have now will run at the same lower speed as your new ram stick. Usually, the faster your ram, the better the computer will run. but if you really really have to go with something lower, go for it.
