I usually write poems, but have been inspired by listening to another song to write one. My problem is knowing what is the usual way to write it. I mean how many times do you repeat the chorous and the bridge? Do you place the bridge after the second verse? How many verses do songs usually have? Do I need a middle 8? I have seen this in one song inside the cd cover, but never before and I'm not sure what it the middle 8 is. Thanks for any help.

I've been in bands for 21 years and have written 36 songs in my life. I usually have a song of my own in my head when I wake up in the morning and ALMOST ALWAYS sing the CHORUS of it first and then come up with the verses to match the chorus and feel of the song. The more instruments you play, the more sucessful you will be in being able to improvise the notes and lyrics of your new song and it will more than likely stick in your head longer. There is and should not be any "set" way to write a song because that's what making up your own songs is all about...not being like anybody else. You do not need a middle or "bridge" if you can repeat the whole songs chorus with a few extras and sound good with it. That is the whole secret behind the professionals like the "Rolling Stones" that keep coming up with new songs every year, for EACH SONG TO BE DIFFERENT. Another way I write without giving too many secrets away is by being mathamatical with the music for a new idea. For example, if some song I wrote has a certain progression of notes, I will then turn them around the opposite, from low to high or high to low and guess what? You have a brand new song! Hope I was of some help.

a song can be writing in any format that what make music unique but, the basic format is a verse is 16 bars and and chorus is 4 bars the bridge is the same length as the chorus and placement is strictly based on the composer's artistic abilities

you do what you want..

i recommend listening to the Beatles in order to learn how to compress music into a three minute song...

or..

you can do what crappy bands like Avenged Sevenfold do and put out seven minute songs full of uncrafted pieces of crappy music.
