In 1972, Blocker died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism following routine gall bladder surgery in Los Angeles. The cast and crew of Bonanza were shaken by his death and it is speculated that the loss of one of the show's most popular characters hastened its end. Bonanza lasted another season, but the final season in which Blocker did not appear is the least-requested in reruns

Dan Blocker died during the last 2 years the series was on television. See Below:

Bonanza was an American western/cowboy television series which aired on NBC from September 12, 1959 until January 16, 1973. Bonanza was the first network television series to film all of its episodes in color. The main sponsor of Bonanza was Chevrolet and the stars appeared endorsing their vehicles. This series also marks the debut of popular actors Michael Landon and Pernell Roberts.

Birthname: Bobby Dan Davis Blocker
Born: December 10, 1928-May 13, 1972
Birthplace: DeKalb, Bowie County, Texas
Height: 6' 4"
Height in Costume: 6' 6"
Lean Weight: 300 lbs
Overweight: 320 lbs (1959), 350 lbs (1970-72).
Eyes: Blue
Natural Hair Color: Sandy Brown
Character: Eric "Hoss" Cartwright

Dan Blocker was Hoss Cartwright, the middle son. Hoss was gullible and not terribly bright, but he was sweet and gentle, as he was huge. He was constantly involved in hilarious situations, usually innocently, and was the butt of many jokes played on him by his youngest brother, Little Joe.
Blocker, however, had little in common with Hoss. He was a friendly man, but hardly dull. He held a Master's degree, and worked as a teacher before he got involved in acting. He had worked in Westerns before Bonanza and was well cast as Hoss. Sadly, Dan Blocker died suddenly at the age of 43, from a lung clot, in May of 1972. Bonanza could not go on without "The Gentle Giant". Dan's favorite episodes were "Feet Of Clay", "Any Friend Of Walter's", "Walter and the Outlaws", "Hoss and the Leprechauns", and "The Wish". He loved working on the two shows with Walter the dog and thought Arthur Hunnicutt was fantastic.

Hoss died during the last few years of Bonanza. Little Joe & Adam were his brothers. Yea, I remember. I think he died of a blood clot that went to his heart.
