If it is on the desktop it sounds like a shortcut. Try deleting it and you'll likely get a prompt telling you that if you want to delete the program to go to the "add or remove program" manager.
If so, go ahead and delete the icon. It won't affect the program.

adobe reader sadly is useful in reading pdf files. if you don't ever use them, just delete the program. if you do, but want to keep the program, just delete it off your desktop. you can end the process automatically starting at the beginning by going to start,run, type msconfig, then unclicking anything that says adobe.

go ahead and DELETE IT !
It is merely a "shortcut" used to launch(start) the program from that screen (called the Desktop)
However, most of us don't start this program in the above manner.
If we select a document or website that requires this program, it will start the Reader program automatically without our intervention.
So, No, it is not needed there, and, YES, you can Delete It.
