its advisable to have sth like peerguardian. c 1st link.full explanation given. it basically blocks away certain malicious IP add. make sure u understand how it works as it might seem rather awkward at first.
also make sure u have backup of yr important files. u cud potentialy download a spyware that will badly affect yr laptop.
download a good spyware cleaner e.g AVG anti spyware-link 2 or free ones such as spybot search n destroy link 3
a good firewall such as comodo(free) or outpost(paid) link 4-5
and a good anti v, such as avg anti virus(c 2nd link) or nod 32 (link 6)
make sure ur firewall is properly setup.
make sure ur security software r up 2 date.
when u choose wat to download avoid anyth that seems too good to b true or dubious e.g a new movie with a fraction of the size it should be or a lot of the porn stuff
Scan every download file.
do not leave yr laptop on for too long with limewire being active. P2P users r being targetted by officials.
make sure u realy need Limewire-a lot of websites provide direct download, but u have to find them.
Torrents r the new trend. they r slightly more secure in the sense that a lot of torrent sites allow comments to be added to the downloads therefor u know wt to expect. c last link.

Be very careful with what you download with LimeWire, certain bots rename files specific to your query, but take a look at the file size and you should be able to distinguish the fake ones from the legitimate ones. P2P networks are plagued with piracy, viruses and porn so it is better to stay away from them.
If you insist on using LimeWire make sure you have proper anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed on your PC

http://www.limewire.com/ is the most used free file sharing site. make sure you have anti virus running before swapping any files. the free edition of avg available from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ does a good job. once you have installed limewire do a search for limewire pro. then install this and delete the original. pro is faster.

the best thing to do is remove Limewire, it is riddled with viruses, also half of the files you get are not what they are actually named

good firewall and only allow the applications you know to access internet.
Make sure you have a good antivirus and scan everyfile you download before opening particularly executable files.
Make sure you don't download any music or video files in an executable format, these are 100% virus

use "peer gaurdian" and don't download or share too many files. the MPAA and RIAA are targetting the major file sharers out there. If you keep it at a minimum you should be okay.
