After the Persian War, Athens was stronger than any other city-state in ancient Greece. It made deals with the other city-states where, in return for protection against Persia and pirates in the Aegean Sea, they would pay a tax to Athens and trade with it. This formed the Delian League, headed by Athens.

With no other power, Athens used the Delian League as its own personal empire. The other city-states, fed up with Athenian rule, asked Sparta, who had not joined the League, to go to war against Athens.

The Peloponnesian War consisted mainly of the siege of Athens. Sparta finally won by throwing rotten carcasses over the city walls. Sickness Broke out, and Athens was conquered.

And that was the Peloponnesian War.

a. The war was not between Greece and Persia.
b. Sparta had the more powerful army, and Athens knew it.
c. I beleive Pericles was already dead.
d. Yeah, this one's right.

The answer - given your list of alternatives, must be "D". But - do remember that Thucydides, the contemporary historian of that war explained it, and all other wars. He stated that people go to war for reasons inspired by fear, interest, or honour. There are very few wars in history that cannot be explained by at least one of those three!
