In the first book, there is a picture of a steam train on the front cover, so how on earth does Hermione manage to ask the driver how far it is to the school as she does on p82 of the book.

It is impossible to talk to a driver of a steam train from the carriages. Mind you, you have to shout when you're on the footplate as it's that loud lol

Well, to be fair, quite a lot of the things in the Harry Potter books are not actually possible!

Okay, first off the bat, it's called magic. There's alot of it in the HP books.

Also, and more importantly, have you ever heard the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover"? It's usually metaphorical, but it has literal meaning too, because the people who draw/paint/design/make the cover art of a book haven't usually read the book, and even if they do, don't pay attention to EVERY little detail. The authors don't get too into the details of the cover art, usually. I'm pretty sure JKR didn't say, "make sure it's a steam train on the front cover, cuz that's what the Hogwarts Express is." to whoever made the cover. If, perchance she did, (very unlikely), then I refer you again to my first comment.

Probably a plot inconsistency. They do happen, even with published authors. People scour films to watch for mistakes, so why should books be any different?

Well actually she asked the conductor, and the conductor would have to be inside the train to check peoples tickets, wouldn't he?

Well, the train would probably be magical, so it could be noise-free!
