Factors that contributed to start of WWI:

Nationalism (looking out for your own country) - created competition and tension between European countries

Imperialism (where a country spreads its influence to other territories; basically, taking over other people and countries) - created tension

Militarism (using the military for diplomacy, building up one's army, etc.) - created tension, such as, Germany started building up its naval powers in order to compete with England

Alliance System (countries in Europe would make secret alliance with each other) - this lead to the war, because at first, Austria-Hungary was at war with Serbia, but then their allies came to their aid, creating a WORLD war

Immediate cause of WWI: the assassination of the Austria-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, by the Serbian nationalist group, the Black Hand

Role of American women: took men's jobs, since they were overseas; Some helped in the war effort as nurses

14 Points - Woodrow Wilson came up with the 14 points, in order to create a lasting peace. These 14 Points explained what needed to be done, in order to avoid future wars. Point 14, was his call for the formation of a League of Nations. Though the League of Nations was created, America never joined, because the government felt that if America joined, it would unnecessarily become twisted into European foreign affairs

Factors include:
-Fast declarations of full Russian mobilization caused panic in Germany, so they declared war on France, Belgium, and Britain in order to quickly defeat them according to the Schlieffen Plan
-Pan-Slavism vs. Pan-Germanism conflict
-Assasination of Franz Ferdinand
-Alliance system dragged in countries that would otherwise have had nothing to do with the Austro-Serbian conflict.
-German weltpolitik (expansionism) caused stress among European nations
-German nationalism

Roles of American women:
-Conscription meant women replaced men as workers in factories
-Some went overseas and acted as nurses or doctors on the battlefield

Look at the 14 points here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14_points
I'm not going to list them all

Concerning the factors that contributed to WW1, I can name two. Nationalism and the arms races that was going on before the start of WW1. All it needed was a scapegoat and that scapegoat came with the assassination of Arch duke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. If his wife wasn't assassinated, WW1 might not have happened.
