Yes, plants need leaves for photosynthesis, and when you cut off leaves, the plant is no longer getting enough sunlight, so it will grows more leaves, rapidly, to compensate for the missing leaves.....I think?

pinching off the growing tip on each stem will help the plant get fuller and sturdier by encouraging more side-branching. take off about an inch from each tip.

I always pinch the leaves back. Makes the plant fuller.

There aren't any plants that grow that i don't cut back ......inside or outside....when I am planting annuals, I cut them back every time they get leggy looking....back to 3 or 4 inches sometimes.
