I'm really considering taking up acting. I acted in high school and was always told I was a good actor. I'm a calm and relatively normal guy; however, I do like to act silly and do strange voices (I break out of my character). I'm a psych major right now and I really would like to get involved in acting, but I don't know where to start. Are acting classes worthwhile? I was also wondering if the "become a model then actor" thing really works, compared to going straight into acting. So should I take some local acting classes or what?

Thanks!

Oh yeah I'm a 19 (almost 20) year old guy.

Oh HI!!! I act to, i am in 8th grade, and i do A LOT of acting, and i have tried and tried to get to the next step. It is very hard. But i googled places looking for actors, and i signed up with this place, they called me, and said i needed professional pictures, to post online, and then they would post my resume. I suggest doing that. That's the eaisest way to get into the buisness. Or just go to local auditions. Good Luck!

You are in college. If there are open tryouts for college plays, go try out. Learn the basics of the script going in. Look for characters that you like, that you would fit. Watch what everybody else does and try casting them in your mind. See who gets the roles. Look at what goes wrong in your try out.
[Are my memories fond of the tryout where I was supposed to play the bartender and had no idea what a bartender does in ordinary actions? No.]
If there is a community theater, see about tryouts there as well as tech and other work. How many plays have you seen, especially from back stage? See more.
A large percentage of the personnel in the theater scene are gay and if you are not comfortable in that environment look elsewhere (that doesn't mean you have to be gay.) A large percentage of actors find considerable satisfaction in hiding in or taking on the roles they are involved in. If you do not think that way, you can be a perfectly good actor, but I don't think it will satisfy you. All actors, to be good, must develop their character from any resources in their life, emotions, training, etc., so they bring the extra details to the character that the director and playwright do not supply. When I was acting, I put on my character in a few minutes of quiet before going on and shed it soon after. I can recall a number of situations where other actors treated me as if I were the character away from the stage (much older and more experienced than I was.) But I became as much of the character as I could during that time and had people who knew me tell me "That was you!?" after seeing the play.
But in the long run, I don't find that satisfying and don't do it any more.
