I started playing guitar (yes, finally!) a couple days ago, for about 2-3 hours a day. My fingers hurt REALLY bad (and no, don't just say 'use a pick,' it's the other hand) and I'm scared that they're going to develop blisters. How do i build up the callousses (totally misspelled that, sorry) without getting blisters?
Thanks!

lol, don't you love how people totally don't even pay attention to the question that you are asking? I was talking about callouses, and I said please don't answer with 'use a pick.' Lol.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful answers! I'm basically trying all the remedies that you suggested (except for stop playing, lol.) And I'm going a little easier on the practicing anyway, I've got hw to do. Oh, and I've got nylon strings, if that helps. Thanks a bunch.

tough it out, the callouses will come...
and dont push so hard on the strings.
also, if you drop some super glue on your fingertips, it dries quickly to form "instant callouses"

It's unlikely that you will blister before callouses.
It is possible to cut through "virgin" fingertips with guitar strings however.
It is suggested that a beginner practice for no more than 20 minutes in a sitting, twice a day.

Well, you can't. When i statred playing, i only played for about 45 minutes a day. I didn't get blisters and i am easily buildin calices. If you are getting blisters, either play for a shorter period of time or just try to play with blisters. rock on

I've just started playing my banjo again after a hiatus. I keep a bottle of ice cold beer right beside me & when my fingies get sore I hold onto the bottle. any bottle of cold beverage will do the trick
happy strumming

maybe you are playing for longer periods of time than you should... you just started a few days ago, so why don't you start practicing for a small amout of time and gradually build up your practice time? then your fingers will get used to it more, hopefully.

I don't have a remedy but eventually you'll get used to moving your fingers, stuff like that. Just give it some time.

are you warming up before playing?
would you run a mile without warming up?
warm up those fingers; play scales and stuff for like 6 minutes before u play any songs...its dangerous not to do so.
