Well, with a large guitar pick, its easier for strumming and playing chords. A medium would be better overall as it is easier to pick individual strings and perform solos.

The advantage of a softer guitar pick is that you can strike chords with a smoother tone, although the disadvantage is that you cannot pick with as much consistency and accuracy on individual notes.

The advantage of a medium/heavy guitar pick is the fact that you can pick accurately and with perfectly clarity within individual notes. Disadvantage is that it gives chords a crunchier sound.

The size of pick should never differ. You should only use a small portion of the tip of the pic. If you are playing an acoustic guitar, you will need a larger pick.

I like the large guitar pick for nut scratching but the medium one for plucking strings
