I haven't heard of having amphibians in the mine, but I have heard of having canaries, other birds, or rodents like rats. The thought behind this is that birds breath oxygen like humans do, and a mine shaft can become filled with various gasses, such as carbon monoxide, which are harmful to humans. Due to size, a bird cannot take in as much of these gasses as humans can, therefore, if the bird dies, the humans would know something was wrong and they needed to get out. I do not, however, know how they resolved the problem.
