The first thing that you need to do is to contact the colleges that you are interested in attending to find out what their entrance requirements are. Most colleges have a special department that assists people with special needs, whether it is a physical disability, a mental health issue, or a learning disability. Contact those departments, frequently called Diabled Students Programs and Services, at the colleges that you are interested in attending. You need to be aware that your IEP diploma does not meet the standard Diploma Requirements in your state. A lot depends on why you graduated with an IEP diploma rather than a standard diploma. Good luck.

You have an i.e.p. diploma. So school recognizes that you need school help to succeed. Did you know that you might be able to go to school on the school systems dime? Please contact your old school for further ways they can help you deal with their system. Also, if you want to learn a trade you might look into trade schools. Its amazing, my son was i.e.p. and yet he did real good in the mechanics trade school program. He really liked it and did excel. You can go to any college you are accepted for entrance by. All you have to do is write or call them and ask what they need from you for admittance. Tell them also you are an i.e.p. student, that makes a difference (they would get more federal funding that way)

Most colleges do not accept students with a special diploma. You might want to get your GED - that is accepted. Unfortunately, special diploma classes do not prepare you for college, so you may not have many of the requirements colleges are looking for.
You may want to talk to a counselor at a community college. You may have to take entrance tests and remedial classes, but that is probably your best chance of getting into a college degree program.
Another option may be to apply for a vocational program such as hair/nails/make-up. They may have different requirements than a degree program.
You can also check with Goodwill Industries and your local JobLink office. They both have classes and job placement services for people with disabilities. Even if it's not exactly what you want to do right now, they may be able to help you improve your skills to where a college will accept you, and you might be able to gain some valuable experience in the field you're interested in.
Since you were in exceptional education, you also have the right to go back to public school until your 22nd birthday. If you think you're able to complete the requirements for a regular diploma, you might want to consider going back to high school. You may need to take extra classes in adult ed/night school, or online, but if you're really determined, it might be worth looking into.
Good luck!

This is a very good question. Check with your local community college. Every college can be different, so if the first one isn't right, keep looking! Some colleges have programs for people without a regular diploma. You may have to take classes to get a certificate or GED before you take regular classes. Also, colleges have extra help (accomodations) for special needs. Good luck!
Here is a list of colleges in New York:

Also you might look in the phone book under "Schools" - "Colleges" and just start calling.

I would check out your high school or the school you attended. In some cases, you get a high school diploma by meeting your IEP goals. Thus, you get a regular diploma. I haven't heard of an IEP diploma.

try this link:

That's a link to SUNY--which would be a really good place for you th check out in any case--the SUNY schools are good. As far as I know, if a student with an IEP Diploma is considered a high school graduate equivalent and can go to any college he/she is otherwise qualified for.

are you talking about a certificate of completion?
anyhow, you dont need to have a diploma to go to jr college or even transfer to university. but there is a time period you have to wait between high school graduation and going to jr college. maybe 6 months.....something like that.
yeah, you will have to take reading and math tests, but its ok. if you show that you need services, they will give them to you.

You have to contact them about their services that are available. You'll have to take an entrance exam.
