It really does depend on how much data (MB or GB) of data you have to shift, what ports (USB, network) the PCs have, whether the donor one can burn CDs and/or DVDs, etc.
If all else fails, I've done this to rescue files from an ancient and totally dead (and I mean deader than a Norwegian Blue parrot!) PC. Physically remove the old hard disc drive from the old PC. It probably has the old IDE or similar hard disc interface, and the new PC probably has the newer SATA hard disc interface, but CD/DVD drives still use IDE. Temporarily replace the CD/DVD drive with the hard disc, and you should be able to simply copy stuff across as usual.

There is a device called the Tornado that hooks up two computers thru the USB ports. It's not cheap ($59.95), but it's all you need to tranfer files easily. Nothing else to add, no extra cables, no software to install. Check it out at

Burn the files to CD or DVD, get a flash drive or transfer to the card on a digital camera.
upload the pictures to something like flickr or photobucket

You have numerous choices either transfer the pics onto CD and do it that way or make sure there are network card installed on both computers and transfer that way.
