I recently bought a second hand iMAC (green). I don't understand anything it does. I click x to close the browser but it isn't really closed. After using a pc for most of my life, this iMac makes me feel like I'm riding a short bus. Any/All tips are welcome.

Hello chacha_waha,

Well, actually when you use the close button, the program is closed. Closed isn't the same as being off though, is it? Look down on the dock. See the applications down there? The applications that are still on have a little triangle underneath them to let you know they're still active.

It's OK, the Macintosh is mulitasking, so there's no problem having a whole bunch of programs on at the same time. You can have all of them up on the screen at once and use Exposé to clear the screen, or happily close it down in the dock.

If you really must stop the program, you can go up to the program name in the menu and down to the Quit (this program) menu command, hit the Apple + Q keyboard shortcut, or use the mouse down at the dock, hold down on the application icon until the little menu comes up and then go up to Quit.

Congratulations on your switching to a Mac. It won't take too long for you to figure this stuff out. There's not that many major differences between Windows and Mac OS X. There are certainly a lot of good books about the Mac OS X. I highly recommend getting David Pogue's book, "Mac OS X, The Missing Manual". Or, you can go to the Macintosh Switchers area:

You can also try to find a Mac Users Group in your area. These guys will get you up to speed in no time, and you will soon wonder why you ever wasted you time with Windows. Best of luck to you.

When you one a new program on mac, you hace WINDOWS on every one, so when you close some window and you need to quit the programa you need to use apple(button)+q in most of the programs, if you dont do that a lot of programs still open until you make that... quit.

on iMac green maybe you have the OS 9, if you can to obtain the OS X, you can see more fliendly the system, you can update that computers to the OS X.

As the others mentioned, you must quit the application from the application's menu or by right clicking (control+clicking) on it's dock icon and selecting Quit. You can also use the Apple key + Q to quit an application.

The Activity Monitor is the equivalent of the task manager. It can be found in your Utilities folder in your Applications.

The close button on a mac, doesn't quit the application, you have to "right click" it (I forget what the mac combo is) and select quit or in the application itself hit ctrl+q to quit the application. And yes, it does have a task manager but not in the traditional sense, it's called the Activity Monitor in OSX. Note, Activity Monitor is only available in OSX versions 10.2 and above.
