My mom and I have had a minor disagreement on this topic for years. Hopefully you can help out. :)
ALL of my friends who've had babies have had at least one, and sometimes more than one, of the following side effects at some point during pregnancy (usually the 1st trimester) -- feeling tired/fatigued, having mood changes and/or mood swings, feeling queasy or nauseus, throwing up, having odd food cravings, or getting sick with colds often (due to pregnancy hormones suppressing the mother's immune system).
When my mom was pregnant with me, she had NONE of these side effects! Amazing, isn't it?? I've told her she's "the exception to the rule", since everyone I know has had at least one side effect, and usually more than one. My mom, on the other hand, says my "statistics" aren't worth much, because I don't know enough people who've had babies.
She seems to think it's COMMON to have no side effects when pregnant, but I'm convinced it's UNCOMMON. It's lucky, but it's not common!

Thank you to all the folks who gave interesting and thoughtful answers. :) I really appreciate it, and in fact I'm having such a hard time picking just ONE best answer that I'm going to let this question go to a vote! (I'm also going to share this with my mom at a later date).

I'm at the end of my second pregnancy. And being tired and hormonal is part of it! I don't know anyone that hasn't had any of the pregnancy symptoms. Your body is going through a huge change of course its going to react. Your mother probably was tired when she was pregnant and just didn't thin kanything of it. I have talked to alot of older women that say that they didn't have problems when they had babies the way that we do today. And I think it is becuase they knew it was part of having a baby, and had alot that they had to do and just kept going.

Having symptoms is common in pregnancy, but they don't have to happen. I had a miscarriage back in 2003. Didn't even know i was pregnant (until i lost the baby). I started gaining weight (not much) but thought it was from working at a fast food place (no cravings either). I had my period the whole time too. So i never thought in my mind that i was pregnant. in jan. of 2003 i got my period and it was so bad i couldnt' get out of bed. My family took me to the hospital and the doctor took blood work and all kinds of other test. Come to find out i was 3 months pregnant when i lost the baby and didn't even know a thing about it, b/c i had no symptoms.

Your mom's either uncannily healthy or has a very bad memory. Almost every woman I know who has had a child has had at least one pregnancy symptom. I have been pregnant twice. I have never had morning sickness; however, I had weird food aversions and fatigue both times. I had terrible mood swings the first time, but not the second. Also, those women who "never" had to use the bathroom very often while pregnant must have very small children.

I don't know "how common" but here is what I think: Eventually in a pregnancy, all women have "some" side effects. Weather it's hungry all the time or getting a belly or having to pee a lot. But a lot of women do not get these until they are 5-6 months. With my first one, I had every symptom you could think of. This one, I'm just hungry and have to pee (3 months so far).

I don't think it's common to have no side effects. However, I'm sure it happens. I've been pregnant three times and know a lot of people that have been pregnant. Everyone I know has had a least one side effect including some that you haven't mentioned. Yet, I've read about people who claim they haven't had any. So yes it's possible, but it's not common.

Extremely rare. In fact , 1 in ten billion kind of rare. Morning sickness, etc. are your body's way of coping with and adjusting to the pregnancy. If someone isn't having any of these symptoms most women get, that means that their body is already prepared to give birth. Hope this helps.

With my son I only threw up maybe half dozen times. I had no other side effects (minus having to go a lot those last few weeks). I didn't even know I was expecting for 8 weeks.

I have worked with pregnant women for 17 years, and I would definitely say that almost all experience at least one of those symptoms. The degree of the discomfort, and how a person deals with it varies greatly.

I agree with you. How can you not have and side-effects when you have a small person growing inside you. It should make you tired if not anything else.
But, boy, I do sure wish that when it smy turn, I'll have an easy pregnancy like your mom says she did!
