use a wooden stand of some kind,put a straight rod (wood or metal-wood can be glued better) into the wood standing straight up,build your 3d model DNA around this to support it.make it using pipe cleaners and small fuzzy balls(no pun intended) from a craft store,or the craft section at Wal Mart.(make sure to paint the support rod in the center a color that doesnt confuse it with the DNA part or else people will call it a triple helix) my 6th grade science project..good luck!
