How much is totally up to you. You can buy for $50k/rent for $300us ... or the sky is the limit. Medical care is good near all large cities. IMSS is cheap but you may not get the service you are used to up north. Private hospitals are not that expensive.
I live on the beach near Manzanillo, rent a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath house for 4000 pesos.
You need to look and visit alot but I'd choose Meixco over Costa Rica any day

I agree with Remy. I am a retired American living in a small town 20 min. outside Xalapa. MUCH cheaper here than In Puerta Vallarta or Chappala...VERY expensive there...and thousands of gringos. Here in Veracruz there are a few gringos, but not too many. Prices are much cheaper, great shopping and cultural events. You can live in the city or in a more rural area close to the city. Good medical care avai...very affordable.

I have found that Puerto Vallarta has more to offer than most tourist destination areas. Good medical facilities to choose from. They are also English spoken.
I guess it depends on what you want. A lot of people retire in Chapala also because it is much cheaper than the tourist destinations. You may have to learn the language to get by in this kind of place.

Hi, everybody, You forgot to mention San Miguel de Allende, at the center of Mexico. It is a charming place with plenty of retired American people. There are groups, clubs, doing many, many activities, like arts, lectures, conversation o reading.
At Chapala, the area where are located the most of Americans is Ajijic.

Mazatlan is a fantastic place and I know a lot of Americans retire there. There is a huge ex-pat community of Americans to liase with there, the beaches are gorgeous, the houses are cheap you can buy a beautiful like beachfront mansion for under 200,000 and medical care is good!

I would totally recommend Lake Chapala in Jalisco is about an hour or so from Guadalajara. Is a small beatiful city, with a lake, great climate and with a large and growing population of Americans and Europeans. You should try browsing a bit about Lake Chapala. Good Luck!
