How do you feel about Los Angeles paying Mr. Spice 5 times the combined salary of the rest of the team? And not even in his prime athletically! Will it really bring popularity to the game in America? Does anyone care? And to that point...did you know that there isn't an American soccer category on this forum? I guess that answers my question....

Well .... it's free enterprise so if one organization or team wants to pay a star that kind of money then .... it's ok with me. Whether or not the move is one that will bring in profits or revenue or sell tickets for the team .... or boost the sport is another matter.

Honestly most people in the US probably don't care. Americans just aren't soccer people, in general. They prefer American Football or Baseball. I really think that 50 million is too much for a man that's really not going to bring too many new die-hard soccer fans.

Well many americans do not like that Beckham will be coming to america. I personally dont mind it but I can see why people don't want him coming, it might just hurt the rise of soccer in America. As far as I know, time can only tell.

I'm surprised people are so negative about this. We won the Gold metal in women's soccer, folks! Soccer is a great sport and becoming more and more popular with children, so it has a great future. As for how David Beckham may be paid, good for him!

To be honest with you nobody cares other than the handful of soccer fans and female admirers that he has in the US.

He could go back to England tomorrow and no one would notice.

Soccer just isn't big here. I don't know how many times I've reiterated that.

Europeans KNOW soccer. Noone would pay the guy 50M to play here, so he went to LA.

Also, there is no separate category because soccer is soccer. You might also notice that there is only one american football category.

I think this is totally insane! There is no way they can justify shelling out that amount of money even if he is talented. Just another example of our misplaced judgment about who and what is important. I would much rather see a talented doctor, educator, or researcher receive this obscene amount of money. I am a huge NBA fan and I think that some of them receive too much money for what they do.

I don't think it will bring anymore popularity to the game and is a total waste.
