I am doing a book report on Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I have read the book, but I don't know what year it takes place. If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. The year is like 10 points of my grade, so it really counts if someone could help me. Thank you to anyone who answers.

The book was published in 1988.

You need an exact year?! That's a stupid requirement, if you don't mind my saying so- so many books have no exact year that almost no one will be able to find one!
It happens in the seventies or eighties, I would think by the publication date. I know that it isn't any earlier than that.
