What does it matter? As a Fashion choice it is repulsive, evil, and un-nuturing in nature. As a lifestyle it is repulsive, evil, and un-nuturing in nature. How anyone can cloak themselves in attire and accessories that represent pain, bondage, and Medieval Creatures is beyond me. If they realized the thousands of children who suffer at the hands of adults who get a charge out of torturing and abuse then perhaps they would see how I cringe every time I see someone who wears spikes around their neck or black lipstick!

Both. It was more of a 'lifestyle' choice in the past but it was a lifestyle where the fashion/music aspect was pretty important. It was a subculture. These days, it's something that's mainstream and it seems to be mostly about the fashion. Music/fashion related subcultures are more of a thing of the past since these days, 'everyone' knows about them and anyone can run to the mall, buy a gothic (or whatever) outfit and call themselves a 'goth'. Depends who you are asking since some people are really into the 'lifestyle' while others are in it for the fashion and to be trendy and may know nothing more about it.

Ok well long story behind the goth subculture. Its about the lifestyle not fashion if you are truly gothic. There's many types of goths too: Renaissance, cyber, ethereal, Victorian, punk-gothic, emo-gothic, Edwardian, Romantic, fetish, and more i cant think of
these days goth seems more like a trend to rebel against the parent subculture. Many teens just buy the clothes and listen to "dark" or "emotional" music. Ive noticed a trend that goths are starting to be leaning towards the emo or scene subculture. MCR, KoRn, Panic! At the Disco, Marilyn Manson, ICP, Slipknot are mainly the mallcore gothic kids' musical tastes.
The bands are NOT considered gothic and are pretty mainstream. Most teens find them 'dark' in a way and then call themselves goth thinking they've got everything gothic right. Then its just wearing the clothes, usually bought at Hot Topic. Music&fashion are all their concerns
I'm not saying Hot Topic is a bad store. Sure some stuff in there is cool once in awhile, I personally like SOME pants or shirts or accesories.
A person truly goth uses the clothes and music to express their mindset instead of letting the clothes and music “create” who they are.

Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

Lifestyle lol It's all fashion brother. It doesn't take changing your whole lifestyle to dress all in black and sport some sweet accessories.

there are different types of goth. I personally, am known as a "glamour" goth, meaning i like dressing up gothic on occasion.
whereas a good friend of mine, is much more the traditional goth. very depressed all the time, has attempted suicide on multiple occasions, etc.
the fact is, being goth means something different to each person who is it. for me, it's dress-up. going from bright yellow belly shirts and skirts to silks and velvet. whereas for others, like my friend, the outward appearance reflect the soul within. dark, devastated, angry.
