All I know how to do is use size 8 knitting needles, cast on, knit, and I think I can purl, even though when I purl it just looks like a bigger knit stitch.

you can use a circular needle for anything- you can knit the same things you would on a straight needles- just cast on and go justs like normal- while having the bennifit of knitting in the round- which is most often used for sweaters, hats etc- anything that you'll need to create a tube shape with-
i use my circulars all the time because i knit on the subway and i can knit and not have the end of my needles in the face of the person sitting by me.
oh- and purling is just knitting on the opposite side of the needle so say you knit from your left needle to your right you would knit into the back of the needle to purl bring you yarn between the needles to the front and "knit" into the front of the left needle to purl on the front-
each stitch create a v or knit on one side and a bump of purl on the other- the difference between a knit and a purl is just whether you want the bump or the v on the front side of the fabric...
happy knitting!!!

Circular needles are used in knitting projects such as hats, some sweaters, and anything else where you may want an invisible seam. Don't stress out about circulars, the first time I tried to use them, I ended up with a big twisted mess. Stick with what you know, you'll find yourself getting brave enough eventually to try more things. I still haven't picked up circulars, I've been knitting for over 3 years! lol

Circular needles are needles that are connected at the non-working end of the needle with a long thin piece of round flexible plastic. They are used for knitting things in the round like hats and sometimes sweaters. It avoids the need to sew seams.

The first link will help you with general knitting questions. The other two describe circular needles and circular knitting.
