Jbin - the question was not when was there first human presence in the America's but rather when when was the first American CIVILIZATION. And the answer to that is what Randy said - the Caral-Supe civilization of Peru.
This civilization was already thriving at the time that the great pyramids in Egypt where being built.

While people were here earlier, the oldest known civilization of the Americas was established in the Caral Supe valley, dating from c. 3000 BCE and inhabited until c. 1600 BCE. The Quipu, a distinctive recording device among Andean civilizations, apparently dates from the era of Caral's prominence. Caral was part of a larger culture called the Norte Chico civilization.

New evidence has recently been discovered that puts humans in the Americas far earlier than anyone thought: 50,000 years ago, rather than the long-believed 13,000 year mark. The new evidence was found in an archaeological dig along the Savannah River in South Carolina.
