Having seen many a Troma film to my discredit I know that Troma stands for "Excellence in Celluloid" and if you watch the older ones you will hear this told to you again and again. it is also the ficticious homeland of the Toxic Avenger, the first super hero from New Jersey. Later they called it Tromaville. Sadly I own ten or twelve of these pictures. I believe it comes from the combination of the words TRagedy, cOMedy, and draMA, TR-OM-MA, and if you pay attention the studio seal reads "Excellence in Celluliod" over the masks for Comedy and Tragedy.

It's been a while since I read Lloyd Kaufman's book, but (if I remember correctly) it was a made-up name that they adopted because it sounded ugly. I don't think it has an actual meaning. A Troma film is a film made by Troma Studios.

Troma is a film production and distribution company founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974. The company produces low-budget, independent movies, many of which have developed cult followings around the world. Many of Troma's films are well known in mainstream Hollywood circles, even though their films are not mainstream pictures.
