the mirrors are rounded... if they were flat like flat screen tv's.. all you would see is what you can see looking out the oppsite back seat window..-- to magnify whats behind you so that you can see if from inside the car, they need to bend the glass like an old tv screen or a CRT screen as they are called... when you do this.. one symptom is that things appear closer then they really are...

ex- take a flat piece of glass and look thru it at something small like a crumb on a table... observe... now take a lense from a pair of glasses.. look thru it at the same crumb so that the round part faces your eye... it will magnify the crumb.. same idea with the cars behind you.. it is magnifying whats behind you...

The way they are positioned on your car so that you can actually whats behind you gives the illusion that the objects are farther than they are.
