Do I need to install all WOW patches inorder to play the game?
Whenever I try to log in it takes me back to my desktop and starts downloading the patches.

Yes, you'll need to be sure to download all the patches. The client installer software that is coming up automatically should tell you the particular patch it is working on and how much space/time is remaining. Have fun in Azeroth.

Yes. Since it's a MMORPG, everyone needs to download the latest patch in order to make it fair for everyone. For example, some earlier version of the game might make a Human paladin too powerful, so in the next patch, the pally's power gets nerfed, so it wouldn't be fair if you had the old pally vs. someone who has the new pally.

Yeah, you need the patches.
It'll take awhile for them to install, based on how many you need and how fast your internet connection is.
