I have been breastfeeding my 7 1/2 week old exclusively. i have had blisters, cracks, soreness, compression lines the works since about day 4. nothing has helped the pain except ibuprofen. I have mastered the positioning, tried everything toget his mouth open further. nothing has worked, he has a very wide tongue (genetic, from his daddy). and cannot get a good latch. i am continueing to breastfeed as he is eating well and gaining weight. now here is my concern:

my nipples have been damaged since day 4. now for the past two, three weeks, they have been turning white!!! it happens randomly, it's wrose in the cold. and it causes an ache that goes through my breast. I;m pretty sure it's not thrush, as bub has no whitness in mouth. it's like the blood is draining away from hte nipps and it hurts like hell.

What can I do, why is this happening, what is it called, and HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER HAD TO DEAL WITH THIS???

I am not sure if this is what you have but when a baby has a bad latch he sucks on the nipple instead of the whole breast causing it to become white. Sometimes the nipple turns white if the baby is using it as a pacifier. Check to see if he is just sucking or swallowing the milk. If the years are moving and you can see him swallow then he is swallowing, but if you notice that he has a “suck suck stop” pattern then he is pacifying himself. Try to teach him to latch on properly because if he does not learn it will become harder. My two month old did not learn and we are having a big problem breastfeeding right now. Good luck.

If my nipples are sore I will also get shooting pains in my breast. The first time I was freaked out and couldn't figure out what it was, I even went to the doctor who said nothing was wrong, just make sure he is latched on good. I started using LANSINOH LANOLIN thinking how is a cream going to help pains in my breast. But after a few days the pains in my breast and nipple pain went away. So now When my nipples get sore I put lanolin on right away and it heals them before i get the shooting pains. As for the white nipples, I remember noticeing that they were white once in a while but I figured it was normal? But now that i think about it, It was probably the damaged, dry skin that was white. now that i am using the lanolin my nipples are always pink and healthy looking.

don't listen to people when they tell you to give your baby a bottle don't give your baby a bottle unless your doc says you need to.

i am still exclusively breastfeeding my baby and he is almost 6 months (he's never had a bottle). and my nipples still turn white when he nurses, but it isn't painful.

whatever you do don't give up. the pain will go away. the baby will get bigger and be able to open his mouth wider.

i wouldn't think that there is anything you could do to stop them from turning white. you should talk to your OB about this. call and talk to a nurse about it or contact a lactation consultant. only time will make things better.

hope this helps

Sounds like a compression mark, perhaps from the baby gumming. You should call the LLL for a local lactation consultant to come over and give you a hand.

YOUR NIPPLES ARE LIKE A BABIES BOTTLE NIPPLE.YOU KNOW WHEN THE NIPPLE GETS ALL WHITE AND ULGY LOOKING FROM BEING USED ALL THE TIME, WELL THATS WHY YOUR NIPPLES ARE LIKE THAT, YOU NEED TO START YOUR BABY ON A BOTTLE.YOU CAN STILL GIVE IT YOU BREAST MILK.
