Writing by committee, an increase in creative participation by non-creatives (execs, producers, etc) brought on by the desire to "oversee" projects that have become increasingly expensive over the years.
Carol Burnett reportedly declined a return to television based on this sort of thing, and I once attnded a panel in which someone told the story of Garry Marshall (creator of Happy Days and countless other great shows) getting so fed up with it that he finally walked out of one meeting, saying "I'd like to thank you for being part of my last meeting in television."
It the sudden rush of additional voices and note-givers that dilute any sense of vision and makes certain programs like THE SIMPSONS (which has very little oversight) seem eternally fresh.

i think that your wrong, but your looking in the wrong places. The most popular, most successful, and most talked about do suck. But that is because the are so generic that anyone can enjoy it, but no one will get anything good out of it. Tv shows like Arrested developement, Boston Legal, Aqua teen Hunger Force are funny and original but not smash break out hits, Movies like I heart Huckabees, thank you for smoking, and an inconvienient truth are really good too. The movies and tv shows that win awards and become pop culture heros like greys anatomy, lost, house, or Superman, Eragon, and any of the scary movie sequels are just crap thrown together to make money and appeal to as much of the mindless masses as possible.
If you dont like the shows and movies i suggested, then try pbs or books, cuz i dont know what else you want

not real sure about the TV angle, but from the movie angle, it's simple. Actors are suddenly given a choice and they want to expand themselves so they do these nasty movies and then expect us to go watch them. blah. Also the sequel effect seems to be running rampant. Just because it's a good thing once, does not mean it's going to be a good thing again and again and again, with the exception of a very few seiries'. And even though it was a really good book, does not mean you can make it a really good movie (cough*eragon*cough). It's that whole money motivates ideal with hollywood. Plus, I think all the stars have these political aspirations (to which WHY? an overpaid hypocritical dancing monkey should not have dreams to run a country) and they really want you to LISTEN to them. I think everyone's forgetting the real purpose of a movie. To be entertained.

I've been around for awhile, and to me some movies and tv shows are o.k. But it's sad to say people don't take the pride in work like they use to. Everything looks so fake now.
