Know what you mean - i haven't asked any yet!
I'd maybe buy a lonely planet guide to australia. It was my bible before i spent 11 months over there.
Clothes are really cheap in oz, i bought loads when i was there and had to buy another suitcase to fit them all in, so don't take your entire wardrobe. (easier said than done)
Just a pair of jeans, a few vest tops/tshirts, 1/2jumpers, a jacket, some trousers, night time clothes, flip flops, trainers, good pair of shoes for the evening, 2-3 pairs of shorts/skirts, bikini. You can get other stuff as and when you need it.
It's always handy to take a padlock incase you stay in a dorm room and your locker doesn't have one on it, a torch, a washing line (for drying your clothes).
Up the east coast you have to go to fraser island, the great barrier reef, whitsunday islands, cape tribulation and the daintree.
Up north darwin and kakadu national park and broome.
On the west coast perth and its beaches (cottesloe/scarborough), rottnest island.
The great ocean road (between adelaide and melbourne)
Ramsey street and the neighbours night in melbourne at st kildas are always good for a laugh.
Sydney (go the the central tower for wicked views all over sydney) and the blue mountains, manly beach, brisbane the gold coast (surfers paradise) and byron bay.
You'll have an amazing time, and meet some great people when you are backpacking.
Have fun :-)

With regards to the points issue, thats just the way it is. I went backpacking to Australia 2 yrs ago. I took a few changes of clothes with me and £2000(9mts stay). You will learn of the places to go to when you arrive. If you consult any good travel agents, they will provide a list of hostels , places to visit etc. Be sure to take out an insurance policy, and also arrange for cover in case you get sick. Innoculations are also needed. Your Doc. will advise. Among others, I visited Sydney, Ayres Rock & the Great Barrier Reef. A Bungee jump is a must. You could also get casual work to help fund your stay.

Never been backpacking, so no idea what to take but I presume you take the necessities.

Visit Steve Irwin's Zoo - it's amazing!
