THe previous answers are good but one point to remember is that populations growth by itself is only a small part of the problem. The biggest problem with diminishing resources is that all of the billions of people who do not live like Americans WANT to live like Americans. Americans are by far the biggest consumers of resources on the planet, far out of proportion to the population. If every person in China or India consumed resources the way Americans did, we already would have run out of everything we need. But with globalism, all of the people in developing nations see what Americans have and they want to have it too. THe world doesn't have enough stuff on it for everyone to live that sort of lifestyle. That's why the human race won't be around 200 years from now.

Overpopulation. Its defined as a situation where a region have too huge a population relative to the resources.
The world population keeps on increasing but the resources are decreasing, therefore there would not be enough resources to support rising population. The ratio is not propotion to it's index.

More people need more food and buy more stuff. This is a simple ecological principle. Any species, if left unchecked, will grow in numbers to the point where it uses up all of its resources and either starves or is wiped out by disease because of close contact.

To have babies, you need to have sex. To have sex, you need energy. For energy, you need food. So, if you have too much food, people have too much sex and have too many babies. And so the world's population increases. But, if you have too little food, everybody dies and nobody gets to have sex. And so the world's population declines.
